Premium Mixed Rot Wood

Premium mixed rot wood! Mixed in terms of both hardwood type (mostly oak, elm and hickory) and state of decay (heavy emphasis on light, crumbly pieces that break apart easily in your hands, but a few pieces might be slightly more hard or solid). Mostly white-rot wood with perhaps a few brown-rot pieces in the mix. The photos listed here are actual photos of previous orders and an accurate approximation of what you'll receive.

All rot wood pieces will be heat-treated at 220F for a minimum of 90 minutes to kill pest hitch hikers.

PRICE: $30 per gallon

- Available only to US Lower 48 states

- Free USPS Ground Shipping on orders over $100
- 15% discount on 7+ gallon orders of Premium Mixed Rot Wood

IMPORTANT NOTES: Premium Mixed Rot Wood price is calculated by volume, not weight, to provide a consistent fill regardless of varying levels of moisture which fluctuate by season. All Premium Mixed Rot Wood is filled directly in the shipping box with no bags or plastic packaging (other than the packing tape securing the box closed). Volume is calculated by box size (ie. a 7 gallon order will be filled into a 12in. x 12in. x 12in. box which is approximately 7.48 gallons). I will always use a box that is just slightly bigger than your requested amount, filled to the top at time of packing, to account for air space and settling during transit. Large void spaces will be filled with shredded/mulched rot wood for a fair and reliable fill every time! The rot wood will not be compressed into the box, but the box will be shaken around during filling to eliminate as many void spaces as possible and minimize the impact of settling during transit. Mold spots and other fungi may be present; this is rot wood after all!

Mixed hardwood bark slabs & pieces! Mixed in terms of both hardwood type (mostly oak, elm and hickory) and size (length, width, thickness). The photos listed here are actual photos of previous orders and an accurate approximation of what you'll receive. The photos with a ruler present showcase approximately how much bark will come in a 7 gallon order (12"x12"x12" box).

All bark pieces will be heat-treated at 220F for a minimum of 60 minutes to kill pest hitch hikers.

I will always use a box that is just slightly bigger than your requested amount, filled to the top at time of packing, to account for air space and settling during transit. Large void spaces will be filled with smaller chunks of bark for a fair and reliable fill every time! I do my very best to "Tetris" your order into the box to maximize how much product you're receiving. The max length/width of the larger slabs you receive is directly dictated by your order volume, for instance a 7 gallon order in a 12x12x12 box allows for slightly larger individual pieces than a 4 gallon order shipped in a 10x10x10 box. Not all pieces will be full size, but I will include as many max-length slabs as I can. Mold spots and other fungi may be present; this bark is not collected from living trees.

PRICE: $20 per pound

- Available only to US Lower 48 states

- Free USPS Ground Shipping on orders over $100
- 15% discount on 7+ lb. orders of Mixed Hardwood Fall Leaves

IMPORTANT NOTES: Mixed Hardwood Fall Leaves price is calculated by weight, not volume, because when it comes to leaves volume is not reliable for consistent pricing as it is directly impacted by how tightly the leaves are compressed. 1 pound of leaves is generally equal to about 1 gallon of tightly compressed leaves or 3 to 4 gallons of non-compressed leaves. Leaves will be fully dried before weighing and packing. All Mixed Hardwood Fall Leaves are filled directly in the shipping box with no bags or plastic packaging (other than the packing tape securing the box closed). Your order of Mixed Hardwood Fall Leaves may or may not contain a few dead bugs, small twigs, acorns, or other misc woodland botanicals.

About Woodland Products

Q: Where do you source your products from?

A: All woodland products are collected legally from my own 20 acre private property right here in Missouri, USA which is primarily an Oak/Hickory/Elm forest with a scattering of other trees such as Osage Orange, Black Cherry, Hackberry, Eastern Redbud, etc.

Q: Are your products free from pesticides, herbicides or fungicides?

A: Yes! We do not use pesticides, herbicides or fungicides in our privately owned forest.

Q: Do you heat treat your products before shipping them?

A: Yes! All woodland products (rot wood, bark, leaves, etc) are heat treated at approximately 220 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate harmful and/or invasive pests.

Q: Why do you heat treat products?

A: It is important to kill pests before shipping not only for the safety of your terrarium inhabitants, but also to prevent the spread of harmful invasive species such as emerald ash borer, etc. This also ensures that local laws are not being violated when I ship wood products across state lines.

Q: What about beneficial bacteria? Isn't it best not to heat treat for that reason?

A: The pros of heat treatment far outweigh the cons. Your isopods, millipedes, etc will already have the beneficial bacteria they need in their stomachs which will easily re-populate the products I send you. If you want to speed this process up and aren't worried about pests you can sprinkle some soil from your yard or elsewhere into the products to re-introduce bacteria more quickly, just be sure it is free from pesticides or other chemicals. Another strategy is to filter some pond water through a coffee filter to add to your bins or terrarium.

Q: Do you have other products not listed on this webpage?

A: Yes! I often have other misc. products available in limited quantities. Examples include: acorns, hickory nut husks, oak galls, lichen twigs & branches, logs for beetles, natural un-refined clay, dried Missouri native gourds, and more! Feel free to contact me by clicking the "CONTACT!" sign at the top or bottom of this page for more information.

About Shipping

Q: When will my package ship?

A: I strive to ship your order as quickly as possible, usually within 2-3 business days of payment. However, because some orders have to be collected from the forest, heat treated, and then possibly also dried for an extended period of time before packing, it can sometimes be up to 5-7 business days before your box goes out after payment is received. I will communicate openly with you about your order any time there is a delay.

Q: What carrier do you ship with?

A: Packages are shipped via standard USPS Ground service by default.

Q: How much does shipping cost?

A: Cost of shipping for smaller orders will be whatever USPS Ground charges me to ship your order to your address + ~$5 to cover packing materials. If your order, before shipping and after discounts, exceeds $100 you qualify for free USPS Ground shipping.

Q: Can I choose a faster shipping service or a different carrier?

A: Yes, upon request! If you are in a hurry to receive your package let me know, and for an additional fee (based on shipping cost to your specific address) I will be happy to upgrade you to a faster service like USPS Priority, USPS Express Priority. If you want a different carrier altogether I can upgrade you to a UPS or FedEx service, again there will be an additional fee for this based solely on how much more it will cost to ship using one of these carriers.

Q: My package is delayed, now what?

A: Unfortunately package delays sometimes happen regardless of which carrier was used. I am not able to guarantee shipping speeds due to this reality. All there is to do now is wait for the carrier to correct their mistake. If your package gets returned to me or completely lost in the mail I will re-ship your order as soon as possible. Delays seem to happen most often with USPS and FedEx in my experience, so for best odds of timely delivery you might opt to upgrade to UPS shipping.

Q: Do you ship anywhere?

A: I only ship products to the Lower 48 US states, also known as the contiguous United States.
